Lecture

  • First Quilt…Last Quilt, and a Few In Between!
This fun and informative lecture shows where I started my quilting journey in 1993 with a sampler quilt where I ask the audience to NOT look close at the hand quilting, corners, matching (?) seams, binding, etc. From there, it progresses through to my two-sided art quilts and my most recent work to date. The audience is encouraged to participate with questions and comments. If your guild is close enough to drive to from SW Washington, I’ll fill my car full of quilts for the lecture. If not, then I’ll bring as many as possible on the plane and bring a slide show for the others.

This program can be tailored to fit the needs of your guild and can be from 30 minutes in length to 2+ hours long. Please contact me for pricing and availability. 360 606-9608

Workshops

  • Deciding on a Quilting Design

Through the use of a good quilting line, you can add beauty and complexity to any quilt top. In addition, you can also add another layer of meaning to the overall design of your piece. Choosing that design, however, can sometimes be daunting.

This is a no-sew class where participants bring three to five quilt tops with them. As a class, we will offer suggestions for the best way to quilt that piece taking into consideration the quilter’s ability, the purpose of the quilt, and the amount of time available for quilting. Attendees are also encouraged to bring quilts that have already been quilted, successful or not, for discussion.

This is a one day workshop.

  • The Art of Machine Quilting

In this beginning level quilting workshop, students will learn proper basting techniques, which machine needles to use with specific thread, and the differences between the various quilting threads that are currently on the market. We will then work on a practice sampler and learn how to stitch over a dozen free motion quilting stitches.

This class can be offered as a one, two, or three day workshop. If it is taught as a two or three day class, students will baste their quilt sandwich in class. We will also transfer a design to your quilt top quickly and easily.

  • Thread Painting: Heron Moon
Heron Moon

One Day Class

This workshop is intended for the quilter who is comfortable with their stitching but would like to take it to the next level. By completing the head and upper torso of the Great Blue Heron – made entirely by machine quilting – students will practice the stitches I use all the time to add depth and dimension to my fiber art pieces.  Topics to be covered include what thread to use and when, the order of quilting, using a hoop, outlining, machine needles, and transferring images to fabric. We will also discuss how to make the piece two-sided.
Finished Size:  20” h x 15” w

Two Day Class

Students interested in taking the more intensive two-day Thread Painting workshop will have more time to work on the Great Blue Heron sampler (above), as well as start working on a butterfly sampler using one of my favorite stitches, Pebbles.
Finished Size:  16” Square

  • Ginkgo

It is estimated that 10% of the ginkgo trees in China are over 1,000 years old. As a result, the ginkgo leaf is considered to be a symbol of longevity in China.

In Japan, there were four ginkgo trees very close to ground zero in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped in 1945. Even though everything in the area was flattened and the ginkgo trees sustained severe damage, the trees did survive and are still there today. As a result, the ginkgo leaf is considered to be the symbol of enduring hope in Japan.

This pattern includes a full-sized master drawing and step-by-step instructions to complete a quilt that measures 35” x 56”. The pattern uses an easy freezer paper appliqué method to construct this quilt – no hand work required! In a workshop, we discuss how to make your art quilt two-sided, so you can have the daytime view on one side, and the night sky on the other. In addition, we discuss options for making the leaves raw-edged with painted fabric.

This class can be offered as a one or two day workshop.

  • Mandala

Mandalas have long been used for introspection and contemplation. Now you can create your own Mandala by using fabric that is meaningful to you. It is the color placement that you choose that creates movement from one quarter-circle to another.

This pattern uses an easy freezer paper machine appliqué method for construction. The confident beginner to intermediate quilter can be successful with this pattern. In a workshop, we discuss how to make your art quilt two-sided, which adds more quilting options.
The pattern includes a full-sized master drawing and step-by-step instructions to complete a quilt that measures 42” square when completed.

This class can be offered as a one or two day workshop.

  • Honu Orchid

Honu is Hawaiian for turtle and is the symbol for eternity on the islands of Hawaii. The orchid is a common flower found on the islands and is often made into beautiful leis. This two-sided quilt features an orchid on one side and a turtle on the other – mirror images of each other.

This is the turtle that is on the other side of the orchid. The outline for both the turtle and the orchid is the same. The pattern includes two full-sized master patterns and instructions for how to easily and precisely line the turtle and orchid up – no math necessary!

This pattern includes two full-sized master drawings and step-by-step instructions to complete a quilt that measures 42” square when completed. The instructions also include information on how to precisely, and easily, line up the orchid on one side to the turtle on the other (no math involved!).

This class can be offered as a one, two, or three day workshop.

  • Labyrinth

Labyrinths have been used for thousands of years as a tool for spiritual communion and healing. Labyrinths are quite different from mazes. With a maze, the objective is to get from one side of the maze to another as quickly as possible. There are also wrong turns and dead ends to deal with. The path and destination of the labyrinth is easy to determine, so it’s about the journey – not getting to the end - that is important. Labyrinths are often considered to be a metaphor for life for that reason.

This pattern uses an easy freezer paper machine appliqué method making construction quick and easy. The pattern includes a full-sized master drawing and step-by-step instructions to complete a quilt that measures 39” x 37”. In class, participants will learn how to place a sun or moon on the reverse side with labyrinth quilting throughout it, resulting in a very powerful image.

This class can be offered as a one or two day workshop.

  • Nautilus

A nautilus shell’s whirling spiral, sacred to both religion and geometry, symbolizes eternity. The nautilus shell is also one
of Nature’s perfect examples of the Divine Phi, a ratio of 1
to 1.618. This ratio appears throughout nature in things like pinecones, rose petals, the pyramids, and even in the human body. In the nautilus shell, what this means is that each chamber is 1.618 larger than the previous chamber.

All the math has already been done for you in this pattern
that includes a full-sized master drawing and step-by-step

instructions to complete a quilt that measures 25” x 40” when completed. The instructions explain how to use a freezer paper machine appliqué method making construction quick and easy. Participants will also learn several options for the reverse side; including placement of a setting sun (or moon).

This class can be offered as a one or two day workshop.

Supply List

  • Blue Heron

The Great Blue Heron is a classic symbol of the Pacific Northwest. This elegant, shy bird can often be spotted near the rivers and lakes that dot this region. Because it is such a still bird when it stands in water, its reflection is visible. Native Americans believe the Great Blue Heron is the symbol for introspection and self-awareness. May you always see a reflection of yourself and see all that is within.

Workshop attendees will learn how to place a sun on one side of the piece, and a moon on the reverse and quilting instructions to really help make the heron come to life. When completed, this fiber art piece measures 30” x 48”.

This class can be offered as a one or two day workshop.
